Beeswax
Everything you need to know about this ingredient in lip care.
Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honeybees to build their honeycomb. In lip care, it serves as a protective barrier that locks in moisture without suffocating the skin. Unlike petroleum-based sealants, beeswax is breathable — it allows air and moisture vapor to pass through while shielding lips from wind, cold, and dry air. Beeswax also contains natural vitamin A, which supports cell turnover and skin repair, and has mild antimicrobial properties that help keep lips healthy.
Scientific Backing
Research published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology has confirmed that beeswax-based emollients are effective at creating a moisture barrier without occluding the skin. A comparative study showed beeswax outperformed petroleum jelly for allowing transepidermal water vapor transmission while still reducing water loss. The vitamin A content in beeswax has been documented to support keratinocyte differentiation, the process by which lip skin cells mature and repair themselves.
